Social MediaBy Ken Mueller, Published April 3, 2014Be the first to comment!Share:Share:Yesterday, I noticed a Facebook update from our favorite local garden center talking about how they have various fruit bushes for sale: blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and a variety of other fruits. “We should get them so they will die. Truth. As much as it pains me, Elizabeth is right. We’re not the most green thumby of people. In fact, our garden is where living things generally go to die. On a regular basis. But it’s not really that we don’t have green thumbs. It’s more a matter of…neglect. I forget about watering them. I’m “too busy” doing other things to make sure they are taken care of and growing properly. One might even say that at times, I just don’t care enough about the plants. Suddenly, they’re dead. But I have friends who have amazing gardens with all sorts of wonderful, delicious bounty. It’s not necessarily that they have something called a green thumb. It’s that they spend a lot of time (and perhaps money) working on their gardens and plants. They plant, water, fertilize, prune, and generally spend a lot of time taking care of the plants. They don’t neglect them like I do. Having a green thumb isn’t some sort of special skill, per se. It’s more about understanding the value of something and investing the time to take care of the plants, and later reap the rewards. When it comes to social media, I think most failed efforts are pretty much the same. It’s not that social media doesn’t work, it’s just that those in charge are generally guilty of some form of neglect. We spend a lot of time and effort on all sorts of marketing and communications campaigns, but somehow, social media comes last. Social media suffers from neglect. “I guess it doesn’t work. No, you just let it die. You didn’t cultivate, nurture, water, and fertilize. You didn’t spend inordinate hours in your social media garden, weeding and pruning. And as a result, you didn’t reap the rewards. So you give up. Or even worse, you do the same thing the next time, with the same results. You don’t fertilize for the sake of fertilizing. You do it because it helps with the end result. You don’t weed because you want to weed. You weed because it helps the plants grow, and you know what’s waiting for you at the end. Oh, and the other thing about my friends who garden and do well with it? They actually enjoy it. It’s relaxing for them. It’s not “work.” They like putting in the needed effort, and it makes all the difference. There are no formulas or templates on how to “do” social media. It will take time and effort. But then again, anything worthwhile usually does. So try to have fun doing it, and perhaps your marketing efforts will reap big rewards.
